Ecstasy and malformed babies

From The Lancet Press Release page:

"Although it is known that amphetamines can cause congenital malformations in animals, whether this happens in women is unknown. Equally, no one knows what the effect of the drug ecstasy (MDMA-a compound similar to amphetamine) is on the development of the child in the womb. In this issue of The Lancet, a Research letter from Dr P R McElhatton and colleagues from the UK National Teratology Information Service (NTIS) reports the outcome of 136 pregnancies during which mothers had taken ecstasy.

There were 78 infants born alive. The rest of the pregnancies were terminated or ended in
miscarriage. 12 (15·4%) had congenital abnormalities- much higher than the national average of 2-3%. There were two children with congenital heart disease (CHD). The authors say that they are "aware of one other case of CHD after exposure to ecstasy".

The authors conclude, "Although this small case series has insufficient statistical power to confirm a causal relationship with any particular congenital abnormality, we consider that these initial data are important."
